Triple Strollers

Many of the features and characteristics available for single strollers will also be available for triple strollers (refer to single strollers for more information). However, similar to double strollers, with triple strollers you must also be aware of some additional considerations that are unique to multi-child strollers.

Stroller Weight

Stroller weight should be a consideration regardless of the type of stroller you select. However, as you move into multi-child strollers stroller weight becomes an increasingly important factor to consider. Triple strollers can be quite heavy. Before you purchase a triple stroller be sure you will be comfortable lifting and transporting the full weight.

When shopping for triple strollers, take the time to compare weights of the different models you?re considering. For some parents, a few pounds difference can mean unnecessary fatigue.

Seating Arrangement

Triple strollers come with a choice of seating arrangements for your children. You can find triple strollers that have a side-by-side seating arrangement or a tandem design. Seating arrangement is very much a parent-by-parent preference and both arrangements have their pros and cons.

You can find triple strollers in a variety of seating arrangements: side-by-side seating, tandem seating (one seat behind the other), and face-to-face seating (two seats facing the third). Side-by-side and tandem seating are the most common arrangements in the U.S. Face-to-face models are more common in Europe and are imported by some retailers.

Side-by-side seating offers several benefits which include: each child has an unobstructed view, children can interact with each other, and parents have easy over-stroller reach to all children. However, side-by-side triple strollers are much wider than tandem strollers and may have difficulty fitting through narrow doorways. At times, you may have to fold the stroller to make it through the doorway or find another, bigger doorway (when possible).

Tandem seating offers several benefits which include: more independence for each child, each child may feel less crowded, and its narrower width allows it to easily pass through any doorway. However, the long length of tandem stroller can make steering a bigger effort than side-by-side strollers and it?s not possible to reach over the stroller to the front-seated child.

Face-to-Face seating offers several benefits which include: a fair amount of freedom, kids can fully interact with each other, its shorter length makes steering easier than a tandem stroller, and its narrower width makes traversing most doorways reasonable, However, face-to-face triple strollers don?t allow for reach-over access to the front-most child and doesn?t allow for all children to face forward.

The latest, most innovative triple strollers available are beginning to offer a variety of flexible seating options to enable parents to tailor their triple stroller - essentially combining the flexibility that?s been long-available with baby travel systems. These latest entries into the stroller market allow for interchanging of upright seated positions and attachable baby carriers.

Stroller Width Versus Length

The biggest challenge you?ll likely face in evaluating triple strollers is length versus width. The seating arrangement you select will directly impact the length-width trade-off. Some important points to consider are:

  • Many parents find that longer strollers feel stiffer to steer, especially when beginning from a stopped position
  • Longer strollers require wider turns
  • Wider strollers can be difficult to traverse stores with narrow aisles
  • Wider strollers may require folding to get through narrow doorways

Unfortunately, there is no perfect solution with triple strollers. It takes space to seat three children and that area is either going to be in the form of stroller length or width. Consider some of the points above as well as how you expect to typically use your triple stroller to help guide you to the best trade-off decision.

Triple Strollers for Action

If you like hiking, jogging, or running, triple jogging strollers may be a good consideration. Not only can this type of stroller meet your typical parenting mobility needs but is also designed to face the fast pace and rugged terrains that active parents tackle.
