Double strollers aren't just for twins! Though many people only think of these strollers for twins, double strollers are also a great option for parents with two children, of any age, young enough to ride. A double stroller is ideal if you have both a toddler and an infant. You'll always be able to keep an eye on both children at once. Many of the features and characteristics available for single strollers will also be available for double strollers (refer to single strollers for more information). However, with double strollers, you must also be aware of some additional considerations that are unique to multi-child strollers. Stroller WeightAs with any stroller, weight should be a consideration. However, when you're considering a double stroller, weight is a more significant factor as compared to single-child strollers. Not only do these strollers comparatively weigh more than single-child strollers, but there is also a large weight variation from one double stroller model to the next. Be sure you check the weight and are comfortable that you can manage lifting and transporting of the stroller. Seating ArrangementWith double strollers comes the choice of seating arrangement for your children. You can find double strollers that have a side-by-side seating arrangement or a tandem (one seat behind the other) design. Seating arrangement is very much a parent-by-parent preference and both arrangements have their pros and cons. Side-by-side seating offers several benefits which include: each child has an unobstructed view, children can interact with each other more easily, and parents have easy over-stroller reach to both children. However, side-by-side double strollers are wider than tandem strollers and may have difficulty fitting through narrow doorways. Tandem seating offers several benefits which include: each child has more independence, each child may feel less crowded, and its width is usually the same as a single stroller allowing it to easily pass through any doorway. However, the long length of tandem stroller can make steering a bigger effort than side-by-side strollers and it's not possible to reach over the stroller to the front-seated child. The latest and most innovative double strollers available are now beginning to offer a variety of flexible seating options to enable parents to tailor their double stroller. In essence, combining the flexibility that's been available with baby travel systems to double strollers and letting parents configure the stroller to either support two seated positions, two baby carriers, or one seated position and one baby carrier. Currently, most of these flexible double strollers are only available in a tandem seating arrangement. Is it a Double Stroller or Twin Stroller? When shopping for a double stroller, you're likely to see two-child strollers that are described as "double strollers" as well as "twin strollers." Many manufacturers and retailers often use this terms interchangeably. However, we have seen some manufacturers make a distinction between double strollers and twin strollers based upon the seating layout. In these cases, the term "double strollers" tend to indicate a side-by-side seating arrangement in which the seats have individual positioning and "twin strollers" tend to indicate a side-by-side seating arrangement in which the seats operate as a single unit. The specific name applied to the stroller shouldn't impact your purchasing decision, it does illustrate that you should check whether the stroller has independent or combined position control. Though neither option has any benefits or disadvantages other the other, you want to make sure the stroller satisfies your preference. Double Strollers for Active ParentsIf you're an active parent who likes hiking, jogging, or running, double jogging strollers may be a consideration worth investigating. This specific type of stroller can meet the daily demands of multi-child-parenting but is also built to handle the fast pace and rugged terrains active parents demand. |
